NOTE: In Newubry, October 1142, at about age 4, he barely escaped death
when King Stephen was about to hang him -- a hostage who had been
given over by his father, John Marshal, after he had broken a truce with
King Stephen. In adult life he became the Earl of Pembroke and was a
celebrated soldier-statesman. He even briefly served as regent of
England.

of Normandy and Count of Anjou. The Plantagenet name is allied to the
Merovingian bloodline and echoes the French "Plant-Ard" or PLANTARD
(other ancestral name). He began the Plantagenet period in England.

NOTES: Henry's mother, Matilda or Maud, had been named heir to the
throne, but King Stephen seized the throne in abt 1135. In Winchester, on

right to succession. In 1170, Thomas à Beckett was martyred at
Canterbury. In 1173, his son Henry, the Young, led a revolt against him.
His death in 1189 was a result of betrayal by his sons.
